Why Extractions Are Needed

Common Reasons for Tooth Removal

While we always try to preserve your natural teeth, certain situations make extraction the safest and most effective path forward. Here are the most common reasons.

Severe Tooth Decay

When decay has progressed so deeply that there is not enough healthy tooth structure remaining for a filling or crown to hold, extraction becomes necessary to protect surrounding teeth.

Trauma or Injury

A tooth broken from an accident, fall, or sports injury that cannot be restored with a crown or bonding may need to be removed to prevent infection and pain.

Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth that are impacted, misaligned, or causing pain and crowding are commonly extracted to protect the health and alignment of surrounding teeth.

Advanced Gum Disease

Severe periodontal disease can loosen and destroy the bone supporting teeth. When a tooth can no longer be stabilized, removal protects the health of the entire mouth.

Overcrowding

When there is not enough room in the jaw for all teeth to align properly, strategic extraction may be recommended as part of orthodontic treatment to create the needed space.

Infection Risk

In patients with compromised immune systems or those preparing for certain medical treatments, removing a tooth with a high infection risk may be the safest preventive option.

Most patients recover from a simple extraction within 24 to 48 hours. Surgical extractions may take 3 to 5 days before you feel fully back to normal. Swelling and mild soreness are normal and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers and ice packs. We provide full aftercare instructions at your appointment.
Stick to soft foods for the first 24 to 48 hours yogurt, soup, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, and smoothies are all good choices. Avoid hard, crunchy, or chewy foods near the extraction site. Do not drink through a straw for at least 24 hours as the suction can dislodge the blood clot and cause a painful dry socket.
In most cases yes. Leaving a gap from a missing tooth can cause the neighboring teeth to shift, affect your bite, and lead to bone loss in the jaw over time. Dr. Bishay will discuss replacement options with you after the extraction dental implants are typically the best long-term solution, but bridges and partial dentures are also available.
