Will a tooth extraction hurt?

No the area is completely numbed with local anesthesia before the procedure begins. You may feel some pressure during the extraction but you should not feel any pain. If at any point you are uncomfortable, let Dr. Bishay know and he will pause to adjust. Sedation options are also available if you prefer to be fully relaxed or asleep.

How long does a tooth extraction take?

A simple extraction typically takes 20 to 40 minutes from start to finish including preparation and aftercare. A surgical extraction such as for an impacted wisdom tooth may take 45 to 90 minutes depending on complexity. Dr. Bishay will give you a clear time estimate at your consultation.

How long is recovery after an extraction?

Most patients recover from a simple extraction within 24 to 48 hours. Surgical extractions may take 3 to 5 days before you feel fully back to normal. Swelling and mild soreness are normal and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers and ice packs. We provide full aftercare instructions at your appointment.

What can I eat after a tooth extraction?

Stick to soft foods for the first 24 to 48 hours yogurt, soup, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, and smoothies are all good choices. Avoid hard, crunchy, or chewy foods near the extraction site. Do not drink through a straw for at least 24 hours as the suction can dislodge the blood clot and cause a painful dry socket.

Do I need to replace the extracted tooth?

In most cases yes. Leaving a gap from a missing tooth can cause the neighboring teeth to shift, affect your bite, and lead to bone loss in the jaw over time. Dr. Bishay will discuss replacement options with you after the extraction dental implants are typically the best long-term solution, but bridges and partial dentures are also available.
